I’m really not impressed. Why sow discord among the fanbase with what was once a tongue-in-cheek, defiant naming? Hasn’t one of the lessons, especially for the Sherlockians among us, always been that labels are silly - and ours to choose or decline individually?

The one and only reason I am not calling myself a Cumberbitch is that it makes Benedict uncomfortable, and it’s one of my few damn rules of being a fan to not make life harder for the person I admire. No one else gets any say in the matter, and certainly not to divide between “real” and “immature” members of the Cumbercollective.

We’re all fans of that wonderful and talented man. End of story.

“A Poem for the Fandoms”

goodbooksgoodcrafts:

Merlin is over

And Hogwarts is too

Sam and Dean’s battle

Is almost through

Donna is gone

The Ponds are as well

John is sad

Because Sherlock fell

In case you were having

A good sort-of day

I wrote you this poem

To chase it away.

#Setlock, or How We Can Survive as a Fandom For The Next Few Months

sketchlock:

bakerstreetbabes:

fridafrag:

Some people are OK with spoilers, and some aren’t.

Benedict has made it clear that he didn’t want pictures of filming to be posted online

Those people who are OK with spoilers might think this is unnecessarily strict, and will post them anyway.

Some people who are OK with spoilers but feel bad about it will seek out the spoilers, but won’t post them or reblog them because they want to respect Benedict’s request (even if they don’t like it).

Some people will avoid spoilers at all costs.

We all have different stances on this issue. So how do we avoid ripping each other to shreds?

Steps you can take to make this filming season more enjoyable for everyone:

  1. MAKE IT CLEAR to your followers what your stance is on spoilers. Specifically, tell them exactly what you will be reblogging/posting, if anything.
  2. BE AWARE that not everyone agrees with you, and that’s what makes fandom (and life) both a difficult and dynamic place. If someone disagrees with your stance, that does not make them a bad person. They have their reasons.
  3. If you are someone who wants Benedict’s request to be respected, make sure to pass on the message in its entirety on your own blog and detail the reasons why you think it should be respected. Not everyone will share your view, but you can have the freedom of conscience that comes with defending your position.
  4. If you think Benedict’s request is unreasonable or unrealistic, and you want to post or reblog spoilers regardless of his directive, make it clear to your followers that you feel this way and for goodness’ sake, TAG YOUR SHIT. Not everyone will agree with you and will get very upset if they see spoilers.

Things you should avoid doing AT ALL COSTS:

  1. DO NOT shame/bully other fans who choose to ignore Benedict’s request. Lead by example, make it clear if/why you choose to follow his directive, and if it really bothers you, POLITELY request that specific fans remove spoilers from their blog. Be aware that they may choose to ignore you, and there’s nothing you can do about that.
  2. DO NOT shame/bully fans who ask you why you are posting spoilers even though Benedict requested to stop doing so. State your reasoning clearly and make your followers aware of the fact that you will be sharing set details regardless of Benedict’s directive. Offer to tag your posts so that they can avoid seeing those spoilers. Be aware that you may lose followers if you continue to post/reblog these things.
  3. DO NOT make your followers feel bad for their stance. They have their reasons. Be courteous and tag your posts so that everyone can experience the fandom in the way they feel is most commensurate with their values.

Hopefully, if we do these things (which basically boils down to being respectful of others fans and their opinions), we can all still be good friends by the time Series 3 airs.

Cheers!

This is a very good and respectful post. We all enjoy things differently. You may not agree with others, but we’re a very tight knit fandom and we  need to not like… kill each other. We’ve still got a few months left of waiting. So tag your shit and enjoy it your way.

As the cast and crew have requested AGAIN.

Please stop trying to snap photos so you can be the “first” to break a spoiler on Twitter or Tumblr, stop reblogging location details, stop posting blurred location image, and stop screaming at the cast on location.

Hey, folks, we heart you all, and signal boost—please show your love for the cast and crew through respect, okay? And not by making it HARDER for us to get our hands on series three?  Right?

I have tumblr-savior for a reason, dears! Enjoy what you will, but give me a chance to opt out of the stuff I don’t care for. I’d really hate to boot some of you.

I’ve said it before and I will say it again. Hoardes of het girls shipping characters as gay - whether they are gay or not - has nothing to do with solidarity with gay people. It has everything to do with turning gay people into personal pets. “Awww, look at my cute gay…

Not shipping a couple doesn’t make you a homophobe the same as shipping a couple doesn’t mean you’re queer fetishizing. Are there some anti-slashers who are homophobes, who are opposed to slash because it makes them uncomfortable? Of course. Are there some slash fans who just fetishize queers and will love any two men who wander in the same frame? Of course. But don’t kid yourself in thinking those are the majority, in either case.

Also, don’t assume that most slash fans are in it for the sex or to get off. That’s ignoring that a sizable portion of slash fiction isn’t sexually explicit.  Just as fandoms like Twilight or The Hunger Games revolve mainly around hetero ships, fandoms that mainly revolve around slash are usually based on the emotional bond people see between characters. There are just as many writers who want to explore that bond using angst, hurt/comfort, romance, etc. as sex. Less than half of the Sherlock/John slash stories on AO3 are rated mature or explicit, for example.

If it was just a matter of het girls wanting to get off on two guys doing it, let me assure you that there’s plenty of free gay porn available. If that’s all you’re looking for, no one needs to parse the looks and body language between two actors on a network show like Supernatural to get their jollies when in two clicks of their touchpad they can watch two guys having explicit sex. But even if they are, so what? Are we supposed to pretend that people’s fantasies can’t have an impact on their psyches?

I’m not trying to argue that slash is a huge contributor to the gay rights movement or anything, but I feel that it’s naive to pretend like increasing numbers of (mainly) girls being unafraid to explore notions of sex and romance between gay characters means nothing, whether it’s experimenting with gender fluidity, rejecting heteronormative standards of pop culture, or simply wanting to construct a world where - for instance - two men can be married parents together.

Or, to quote Amanda Hess’ article about bandom, “Slash and Burn”:

The false dichotomies of those traditional romantic structures—straight or gay, friend zone or marriage track, sex or love, masculine or feminine—are crumbling…With few strong female characters represented in books and movies and One Direction songs, romance between two male friends gives girls the opportunity to explore a relationship based on equality and respect…Slash opens the door for girls to experience love and sex in ways that previously only boys have been allowed—as a free and fun experiment, no judgment.

Wonderful, wonderful commentary by thecutteralicia as usual.

I have to admit that when I first got into the Sherlock fandom, I found shipping and slash “weird,” but the more I got sucked into read slash fiction, the more I saw how it was actually a way for many people to experiment with ideas on gender/sexuality/relationships/love/etc. in a generally safe, supportive, and structured community. I know my own views on those topics have certainly become more reflective and nuanced as a result of reading good slash and just from being involved in the Sherlock fandom in general.

If Tumblr controlled schools

  • Religion: Kids, This is Tom Hiddleston. He is our god.
  • English: Today, you need to write a 5 paragraph fanfic of your OTP. It needs to be size 12 font and not in Comic Sans. Remember, your 2 page paper on why you shouldn't skip Nine is due next week.
  • History: ...And that's why Benedict Cumberbatch is on the 4 dollar bill.
  • Science: Your homework is to watch 1 Episode of Doctor Who and identify 2 aliens and their home planets.
  • Drivers Ed: So we avoid the pedestrians unless they are Cole Sprouse.
  • Math: Now, can someone tell how Sherlock survived the fall from that height?

Dashing through the street
To chase a random cab
Is it too late to ask
If Sherlock has gone mad?
And now we share a flat
At 221B
I’m pretty sure that Sherlock Holmes
Will be the death of me!

OH

Jingle bells, what the hell?
Mycroft, go away!
Just in case somebody cares
I really am not gay
HEY
Jingle bells, what the hell?
Finally, we’re home
But there’s a head inside the fridge
And I don’t wanna know!

I had a date last night
And Sherlock tagged along
I was not surprised
That everything went wrong
I swear, we almost died
He won’t come with again
And now my girlfriend thinks that she
Has awful taste in men!

OH

Jingle bells, I can tell
My life will be a mess
But if you live with Sherlock Holmes,
It’s obvious, I guess
HEY
Jingle bells, might as well
Go and make some tea
I’ll write a blog and just pretend
That nothing’s wrong with me!

EVERYONE READ THIS!! IT’S IMPORTANT! ANDREW DESERVES RESPECT!

I still can’t believe she’s going to publish that book full of shit about our beloved Andrew :(

Isn’t it illegal to publish it without permission I wonder if anything can be one about it. I keep seeing her going on about it. That lady freaks me out and is completely delusional about her ‘role’ in Andrew’s life.

I have no idea if it’s illegal, but i know she went too far already with Andrew! She’s freaky and wants to know every little detail about his life. I hope everyone will see this interview, even if i have to reblog it everyday so that NO ONE will buy her ‘book’.

Please, if you consider yourself an Andrew’s fan, don’t buy that book. I don’t know either if it’s illegal or not, but the important thing is that we don’t want to hurt Andrew’s feelings more than this person has done already. SO PLEASE REBLOG THIS POST AND LET ALL THE FANS KNOW. Not buying that book will be another proof for Andrew to know of how much we respect him and care about him!
